Nevfurmore creature costuming company logo design
Overview
Nevfurmore is a creature costuming company based out of Pittsburgh. As their business began to grow, they realized they’d need to get their branding and online presence more clearly defined, and sought an artist to create a logo for them. I offered my services, and after seeing my other works and the logo I designed for the Midwest Furfest 2017 convention, they were keen to work with me.
Research
Nevfurmore’s mascot is a raven named Edgar which wears a bright red ribbon. Inspired by Edgar Allen Poe, their mascot is intended to look more like a ghostly apparition than a living bird.
They did not have much in the way of existing art for their mascot beyond the above two images.
I spent some time practicing drawing ravens and crows from creative commons photographs before getting to work on the concept sketches.
Client’s parameters for the logo design
No specifics were given other than the creation of a crisp logo depicting the mascot as described. They wanted a version that would include the red bow.
I decided to create a black and white logo in which a version with the bow colored red would also work well.
As they are a costume design company, the logo would likely be used in custom clothing tags sewn into the costumes and other merch. This gave me some room for “taller” designs that would fit on a clothing tag.
They would also, of course, use the logo on their website and social media. A smaller version which could fit into a circular profile icon would be needed.
Concepts
I offered the client three concepts from which to choose for the final logo.
Chosen concept
The client enjoyed the second concept of the side profile raven the best among the three.
Art process
With the concept chosen, it was largely a matter of tidying up the details into a smooth vector that I could then color as needed.
I first made some adjustments to the sketch in order for it to appear less scrunched up and to allow for smoother details on the wing.
Final result
The final result had all the smooth lines and shapes one would expect for a logo, with the added bonus of such a bold presence from all the feather details.
I also created a circular version with just the raven’s head and the ribbon’s red as a background color for them to use in social media and elsewhere.
The client was pleased with the results.
Zelaphas was quick to work with the details I provided, going so far as to even draw 3 different examples for me and my work partner to choose from! They were also very patient, and were quick with updates. We are very happy we were able to work with them!
